Virginia Catherwood was a British-born woman who spent her childhood in Germany. Her family returned to England when World War II broke out. In 1941, at the age of 21, Catherwood registered for military and was placed in the Royal Air Force. During her time in the Royal Air Force, which lasted the duration of the war, Catherwood worked as a German translator in political intelligence. In this position she scanned radio frequencies looking for German bombers and broadcasted anti-Nazi propaganda on the BBC’s overseas radio. In 1945, Catherwood met an American soldier and was married in London before moving to the United States to live in Brooklyn, New York.
