Mervin Cohey was born in 1926 and grew up on a farm with nine siblings. He joined the Army late in World War II and arrived in Europe after the end of the conflict. Mervin was assigned to, among other things, help clear everything out of one of Hitler’s houses. While he was there he witnessed postwar starvation conditions in Germany. After some difficulties with getting transportation, he ultimately returned home to Maryland, where he went on to marry and adopt two daughters. In this interview, Mervin Cohey discusses his childhood, including his memories of the home front and World War II’s effects on Chestertown. He also discusses his experiences serving overseas after the end of the war, and how his life unfolded once he finally returned home to Kent County.
