Patricia Gates recalls World War II as a “fearful time”. She remembers the frequent air raid and blackout drills in her hometown of Titusville, Pennsylvania where the local oil refineries and steel mills were seen as a target for enemy attack. She says the stress of the war may have contributed to her parents’ divorce and she moved to Fresno, California with her mother. While in Fresno she became close friends with a Japanese girl who had been in an internment camp.
