While somewhat sheltered as a child growing up during the war in the tightknit Chestertown community, Nancy Morris still felt the presence of the conflict. The movie theatre that her father owned was a gathering point for the local children. At the movies Nancy recalls seeing the dramatic images from the warfront on the newsreels before the films. In one particular incident, Nancy vividly recounts an incident in which a ferry she was on to Baltimore was forced to stop and extinguish their lights in the middle of the bay due to fears of a German submarine. She also talked about race relations and growing up as a child in Chestertown during the war.
