Dr. Ralph Thornton served in the United States Army during WWII. After graduating from Washington College in 1940, Thornton was drafted in the fall of 1941. In 1943, Thornton was put in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) and attended the University of Missouri for nine months. While at the University of Missouri he was immersed in Italian culture and language. Following the war, Thornton returned to Chestertown and became an English instructor at Washington College and taught there for four years before using the G.I. Bill to earn his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania.
