Sue Urda lived in Ambridge, Pennsylvania as a child. She was about ten at the end of World War II, and two of her brothers fought in the war, including one who served as a machine gunner and took part in the invasion of Normandy. She is one of six children, and she experienced firsthand both the difficulties of home life during the war, with rationing and air raid drills, and the emotions of having loved ones fight. She participated in the 4H, making homemade items to supplement the rations allowed during the fighting. She tells of her mother, who worked throughout the war as a substitute teacher and was active in the community with civic clubs and neighborhood improvement. She now lives in Chestertown, Maryland.
