Charles Hedenstad spent two years in the Navy between 1946 and 1948. Although the ground fighting was complete, the draft was still in effect and in order to avoid being drafted into the Army after graduating from high school, Hedenstad decided to enlist in the Navy. Hedenstad completed boot camp at the United States Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland before being deployed on two different destroyers in the Atlantic.
