William “Buddy” Hurley was 17 when he enlisted in the Navy in 1943. Due to his work at a canning factory and slight color blindness, Hurley could have been exempt from the draft, but he was adamant about joining the Navy and signed on for a minority cruise. During his service, Hurley served as a deckhand and gunner on a destroyer. In his interview, he describes life at sea including living arrangements, finding time to sleep, work on board, meals, and refueling.
