James Ireland, interviewed by Brady Townsend, Molli Cole, and Michael Buckley on June 11, 2014, enlisted in the military in 1939 at the age of 20. Ireland was blind in one eye as a result of a childhood accident and was put on limited service and told he would never leave the United States. Six months later, however, Ireland was sent to Italy and then North Africa where he served as a military policeman. In this position he guarded military installations, maintained order among the soldiers on leave from the front lines, and handled prisoners of war.
