Fred Israel had the unique perspective of being both a citizen on the home front and a naval reservist during the war. Attending college at the age of 16 in New York City, Mr. Israel was one of the few men on campus as the rest had been called away to the war. As soon as he was able, Mr. Israel joined the navy reserves. On the train back to his base in Chicago, Mr. Israel remembers the end of the war being announced and soldiers and civilians celebrating together.
