Lawrence tells his mother about the classes and exams at Washington College and how he is too busy to make it home. He talks about his friend "Old Nick" who wanted to enlist it the Marines but did not meet the height requirement, Nick had also hoped to be drafted but it didn't happen so he is now rooming with another friend, Bounds. Lawrence also talks about how they have to get up at six am to drill, how he didn't know he had to pay for The Collegian, and that his friends are helping him find a job. He also comments on local news and the recent Children's Day in Chestertown.
