At the inauguration of President Mead, Franklin D. Roosevelt received an Honorary Doctor of Law. In his acceptance speech, he built on his New Deal principles. He remarked on Mead’s speech, which talked about the individual spirit of the pioneer but also how another pioneering spirit was cooperation and how building community made the United States possible. He spoke about the idea of redistribution of wealth, and how allowing every citizen to feel secure in their lives and not worrying about day-to-day necessities would encourage progress and safeguard the nation. He also talked about the importance of higher education, but that it must be available to all, protected, and applied correctly.
