Cornel West's lecture "Race in the 21st Century." Members of the Green Party and Western Maryland College attended. Prof. Harriet Masembe along with three students, Dennis Wilson '01, Penny Tilghman '02, and possibly John Killan did the introduction ending with Masembe quoting "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou. West talked about how if we are to examine racism in America we must look and acknowledge the inherent injustice of American Democracy. The racism in the Justice System, how the voices of the masses are not being heard, and what life will be like in the future. Much of the talk was about pushing back against White Supremacy and the importance of doing what is morally right. He ended on a challenge in that every generation must regenerate and revitalize Democracy by looking at the problems that are ignored and overlooked, which requires one to be both critical and compassionate. A question and answer section begins at 00:43:45 and topics include Civil Rights in the 1990s, African American male college athletes, systemic racism in the criminal justice system and police reform, Black sexuality and the Black body, economics, art, and activism in Hip Hop. At 01:40:50 awards were given for the Black History Writing contest, winners were Laura Walter '03 and later a Sophie Kerr winner, Amy Milauskas '03, and Nichole Derr.
